Silver Lake Partners and PIF, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, have reportedly held recent talks to acquire Unity. The report comes from Reuters, which cites confidential sources familiar with the matter. Reuters is paywalled, so this story relies on IGN's coverage of it, as relayed by GameFromScratch.

According to the report, the consortium approached Unity in recent weeks. Silver Lake already owns 8% of Unity, which GameFromScratch describes as making it the company's largest existing shareholder. The buyers discussed a valuation of about $25 billion before Unity's latest earnings report. That report lifted Unity's market capitalization to roughly $21.5 billion.

Unity has reportedly been consulting an investment bank to evaluate its options after the approach. The talks are described as preliminary, and no deal is assured.

The earnings report in question reportedly included Unity's first profit since it went public in 2020, according to GameFromScratch.

Silver Lake and PIF have recent history in games. They teamed up with Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners to acquire Electronic Arts for $55 billion, a deal finalised in August. IGN's coverage notes that EA has since started major corporate restructurings and studio closures. These include shutting BioWare and cancelling the next Mass Effect game.
