Unreal Fest Tokyo: UE6 to remove Blueprints and C++ Gameplay Framework
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said at Unreal Fest Tokyo 2026 that Unreal Engine 6 will remove Blueprints, Actors and the C++ Gameplay Framework outright, with gameplay moving to Verse and Scene Graph. Unreal Engine 5.9 was also confirmed, with a preview due next week.

Unreal Engine 6 will remove Blueprints and Actors entirely instead of deprecating them. The C++ Gameplay Framework is also being abolished. That is according to an account of Tim Sweeney's keynote at Unreal Fest Tokyo 2026 (November 3-4) from attendee YuewuDev, relayed by GameFromScratch. It changes the plan Epic gave at Unreal Fest Chicago / State of Unreal in June 2026, when Blueprints and Actors were expected to remain in early UE6 versions and be deprecated later.
Game logic will move fully to Verse and Scene Graph. C++ will still be used for core engine systems such as rendering and physics, but not for the gameplay framework. The reasons given were higher development productivity, better content portability and interoperability across games and ecosystems, and stronger compatibility with AI-assisted development. Epic reported significant efficiency gains from its own internal Verse-based work.
Sweeney called it a "painful change" and apologized to developers attached to Blueprints. He noted that Epic is feeling the same pain, for example in migrating Fortnite to Verse without interrupting the service. For migration, AI-powered conversion tools are planned to help move from Blueprints and C++ to Verse. Their exact form has not been decided.
Projects already in development on UE5 can continue on the UE5 branch, including UE5.9 and future 5.x releases. UE6 Early Access is still targeted for the end of 2027. GameFromScratch notes that developers who don't want to do gameplay programming with Verse and AI prompting will be staying on Unreal Engine 5.x.
Epic also said Unreal Engine 5.9 is coming in Preview next week. It will include improved AI workflows, web as a target platform, and rendering and animation updates, among other changes. Some changes are being made in the 5.9 branch on GitHub, with more to follow. Epic said it will share more details when the preview is released.
