Microsoft and AMD have announced that FSR 4.1 is coming to Xbox Series X|S. Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet confirmed the plan in an announcement video, according to GamesIndustry.biz. The only timing given is "soon", so this is an announcement, not a release.
FSR 4.1 is a machine-learning-based temporal upscaler. It renders a game at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image at a higher one. GamesIndustry.biz reports that AMD did not share any other details for Series X|S.
The tech is not limited to Xbox consoles. It will also support Radeon RX 6000-series graphics cards, Gorgon Halo and Strix Halo Ryzen 9 laptops, and handhelds such as the Asus ROG Xbox Ally devices, which use Z2 Extreme and Z2A chips.
For developers, the main point is that this is opt-in. Games must be patched to use FSR 4.1, so existing titles will not pick it up on their own. Teams shipping on Series X|S will need to wait for AMD and Microsoft to publish release timing and integration details before they can plan work.
Expect modest results compared with Sony's console. GamesIndustry.biz notes that Series X|S have no dedicated machine-learning hardware, so gains are unlikely to match the PS5 Pro, where Sony already offers its own upscalers, PSSR and QSSR. Per GameSpot, Van Vliet also said Microsoft and AMD are working together on Project Helix, the next-generation Xbox.
