Unreal Engine 5.8 is out: MegaLights goes production-ready and Lumen Lite arrives

Epic's 5.8 release moves MegaLights, Movie Render Graph and Iris replication to production-ready, adds a cheaper Lumen Lite global illumination mode in beta, and introduces experimental Mesh Terrain.

Unreal Engine 5.8 was released on June 17, 2026. The headline change is maturity: MegaLights, Movie Render Graph and Iris replication all move to production-ready, and Chaos Cloth and Mutable are listed as production-ready too.

On the rendering side, Lumen Lite arrives in beta as a medium-quality global illumination setting. Epic's release notes describe it as twice as fast as Lumen high quality. MegaLights gains froxel-based translucency and new debugging tools.

Several worldbuilding and character tools land as experimental, so treat them as previews: Mesh Terrain, Fast Geometry Streaming, the Procedural Vegetation Editor, Substrate NPR shading, Direct Mesh Controls and single-camera body capture in MetaHuman Animator. Control Rig Physics moves to beta, and Epic also ships an experimental Unreal MCP Server plugin for connecting LLM tools to a project.

Before upgrading, note the changed defaults. WASAPI is now the default audio backend on Windows (XAudio2 can be restored in WindowsEngine.ini), Zenserver as the cooked output store is on by default, and OpenXR stereo layers now follow layer priority. Visual Studio 2026 is recommended, with 2022 v17.14 as the minimum; macOS requires Sonoma 14.0 or later.

Epic has since shipped hotfixes, most recently 5.8.3 on September 22, 2026.
