Unreal Engine 5.8.4 hotfix adds Visual Studio 2026 .slnx support and crash fixes

Epic has released the Unreal Engine 5.8.4 hotfix with fixes across the editor, rendering, Movie Render Pipeline, MetaHuman and platform tooling. Visual Studio 2026 users get native .slnx solution handling, and one known issue is already listed.

Unreal Engine 5.8.4 is out, announced on the official forums on October 20, 2026. The hotfix covers the editor, rendering, media, virtual production and platform tooling. Epic asks users who hit bugs in the 5.8.3 hotfix to report them through the Bug Submission Form.

The most visible editor change is for Visual Studio 2026 users. The editor used to open a new Visual Studio instance each time it opened a source file, for example when you click a Blueprint's C++ parent class link. It now reuses the running instance. The editor also recognizes the .slnx format, which fixes the Open Solution toolbar button and the saving of open Visual Studio documents before a Hot Reload compile. If both .slnx and .sln files exist, the editor opens the .slnx. If only a .sln is present, it still uses that.

Rendering fixes include a Lumen regression where the indirect lighting atlas was cleared every frame while a SceneCapture2D was rendering Materials. A MaterialShader assert is fixed by updating CachedExpressionData whenever SetMaterialUsage is called programmatically. The shader preprocessor now reports unclosed string and char literals instead of scanning past the end of the file. The Path Tracer no longer misses the specular profile in certain Substrate materials, and the D3D12 enhanced barriers implementation was improved for correctness. Advanced Shader Delivery gains support for generating SODBs via the ASDTool for compute shader and bundled PSOs from a cooked game.

Other fixes touch crash-prone areas. Movie Render Pipeline had a garbage collection issue in viewport hit proxies that could crash Object ID pass renders, plus a crash when audio was a requested output but a sequence or some shots had none. Media fixes cover playback of tiled TMV files larger than 8K through ImgMedia and a D3D12 crash with NDI sources. MetaHuman gets RigLogic fixes for finger twist angle extraction and a DNAIndexMapping desync crash. Mover has fixes for concurrency-related crashes in trajectory prediction from a worker thread, and ChaosVehicles now receive input under Physics Prediction when driven by an AIController. The Mac and Linux editor no longer crashes on scripted Live Link Face ingest.

On build and platform side, Horde now prevents path traversal when extracting artifact and workspace contents. UnrealBuildTool lets PVS Studio work with different preprocessors, and UAT no longer garbles commandlet output on non-Latin codepage systems. The iOS client now uses the UIScene lifecycle by default, which is worth testing if you ship on iOS. The base profile adds iPhone17e, new iPhone18Pros and new iPadAir devices, and an iOS .app finalize failure with macOS27 is fixed. The EOSSDK is updated to v1.19.2.1, binaries only.

Before upgrading, note known issue UE-401568: in PCG Editor Mode, the Paint Tool fails to update in real time. The listed workaround is to perform any other action, after which the meshes appear. Feedback on the release goes in the Unreal Engine 5.8 Released topic.
