Brunch Studio has published a series of breakdowns of the Valorant: Through the Cracks cinematic trailer. Riot Games presented the trailer in June. It reveals Summit, a new VALORANT map that follows the events of Why We Fight Back.
In the story, Summit is a training facility high up in the mountains of China. Sage is recovering there from injuries. Wounds from Viper's attacks begin to take over her body, and she has to confront the radianite serpent to stop the painful crystallization from spreading.
The trailer was directed by Paul-Eugène Dannaud and Benoît de Geyer d'Orth of Turbo Collectif. According to 80 Level, the team used Maya for sculpting and animation and Houdini for the VFX.
The breakdowns follow the core shots from a rough concept sketch, through a pre-rendered Maya animation, to the final render with glowing emerald crystal materials. Designs changed along the way. The final serpent has a wider, more rounded head than in the original sketches, and Sage has more crystal-shaped scales on her skin than first outlined.
More breakdowns of the cinematic are on Brunch Studio's Instagram. They are worth a look if you work on stylized creature or character shots and want to see how a design shifts between sketch, animation and final lighting.
